Friday Focus...or lack thereof

One of my least favorite feelings in the world is looking up from the computer screen (you know, the one you've been staring at like a zombie for the past 30 minutes without coming up for air?) and realizing not only that I am in class, but that I also have absolutely no idea what sweet Dr. Ohde is talking about.  Yeah, that just happened.  So I'm thinking about chalking my apparent ADD up to the fact that it is a rainy Friday morning and instead of trying to make sense of the acronyms, diagrams, and numbers that are flying in my face at the moment, I will share with you some of the goodness that I have come across during my past 40 minutes of studious blog-stalking note-taking.

Loving the new sock trend for Fall.  Not completely sure if I can pull them off but I might give them a try the next time I head into East Nashville.

Obsessed with this post-Nashville flood makeover story.  Though I don't envy their situation at all, the house looks absolutely amazing now that local designer Rachel Halvorson has gotten her hands on it.

Think I might have to try out these cupcakes for the hotel-hosted tailgate this weekend.  Who should I root for?  Vandy?  LSU?

Happy Friday, y'all!

It's Not Just Me!

As it turns out, I'm not the only one around these parts who is feeling stressed.  In fact, it looks like the entire city of Nashville needs to join me in the adoption of my new mantra.  When perusing the local news this afternoon, (because let's face it, the Middle Tennessee local news can be pretty hilarious), I stumbled upon an article which proudly proclaims that Nashville is ranked as number 28 in the Top 50 Most Stressed Out Cities in the United States.  Well, at least I'm not alone!

But come on people...when you live in a city that is this beautiful, what is there to be stressed about?

Why am I doing this again?

So this whole externship thing hasn’t exactly gone according to my carefully laid out plan.  In my perfect world, I would have received three offers from my three requested locations and would have had my pick.  But instead, nothing is a sure thing and I am wondering if I will end up with an externship at all.  Okay, that’s the inner drama queen talking.  I know I will end up somewhere and it will be great but all this uncertainty is really taking a toll on that whole 8 hours of sleep thing.

Living life the way I am at this moment, at warp-speed and consumed with school work and worry for what the future may bring, I sometimes have trouble remembering what the whole premise of this blog was in the first place.  Sure, it is a place where I can vent to anyone (or no one) about the stresses that come with my life as grad school grandma and where I can tell funny stories of the everyday adventures of life in clinic.  But this blog was also supposed to be my daily reminder to live in the moment.  To take advantage of the here and now rather than fretting about the future.  Because really, there is so much life happening all around me right now and it would be a shame if my obsession with making plans for the future caused me to miss even one second of it.  So with that in mind…I’ll leave you with a little quote that I read the other day and found oh-so-appropriate.  I plan on reading it every morning and adopting it as my new mantra.  In addition to “worry less, smile more, and eat more froyo.”  Came up with that one all on my own J

"I will not die an unlived life. I will not live in fear of falling or catching fire. I choose to inhabit my days, to allow my living to open me, to make me less afraid, more accessible, to loosen my heart until it becomes a wing, a torch, a promise. I choose to risk my significance; to live so that which comes to me as seed goes to the next as blossom and that which comes to me as blossom, goes on as fruit." - Dawna Markova

Hoping you had a Labor-Free weekend

Happy Tuesday!  I hope everyone had a fabulous Labor Day weekend.  I also hope that you did your fair share of boozing and BBQ’ing for me.  Though I had a great weekend complete with a Vandy tailgate, dinner at Lime (a favorite of Keith and Nicole), and a night out in the honky-tonk...

Chi O loves our 'dores?!  I'm officially a convert.

....my roommates and I commemorated the holiday staked out on the porch up to our eyeballs in research articles.  We may not have marked the day with burgers and beers but we took it easy and enjoyed the scent of (the neighbor’s) Labor Day BBQ.  But hey, I’ll take this spot over the Eskind Biomed Library any day.

Having a Little Pre-Fall Withdrawal

I’m sorry, what?  It’s September?  Not quite sure when it happened but I guess it’s that time of year again.  Fall is just around the corner and I am craving the smell of freshly sharpened Ticonderoga’s, pumpkin spice lattes, and that crisp fall air that makes you feel like you should be in the stands at a high school football game.

Being an October baby, I have always loved this time of year and am convinced that it is the most perfect weather.  Ever.  But I also grew up in the Northeast.  When living in the South, Indian summer is the new autumn and a cozy September sweater is replaced by a swimsuit.  An afternoon spent by the pool replaces a Saturday at the apple orchard.  But I can’t say I am complaining just yet.  Considering my summer was lack-luster to say the least, I am happily indulging in a few more doses of vitamin D.  However, you can bet I will be heading back home at some point during this semester so I can get my real fall fix.  And maybe some apple cider donuts.

What's your favorite thing about the Fall?
